AIR: Le Voyage Dans La Lune

Apparently, French electronica/pop duo, AIR, composed a soundtrack to accompany the 1902 silent French film, "Le Voyage Dans La Lune for the 2011 Cannes Film Festival. Having watched the film, I can imagine how AIR's musical aesthetics would fit nicely with its quirky turn-of-the-century special effects and whimsical premise. Check out the film (with narration) below:

This film was the first science fiction film ever, and is considered a landmark of French cinema. It's title translates to "A Trip To The Moon."

Inspired by their work on the Cannes project, AIR have now decided to release a full-length album inspired by the film.

Le Voyage dans la Lune is to be released February 7, 2012 and will feature contributions from other bands. For a tracklist and more info, visit the Astralwerks website here.

Elliott Smith: "Misery Let Me Down"

As a fan obsessed with just about anything Elliott Smith-related, I was pleasantly surprised to discover that a "new" song by Elliott had surfaced. Apparently, Elliott played a set for WMUC, the University of Maryland radio station, in 1997. The loss of Elliott, who committed suicide in 2003, was tragic for all those whose lives he had touched. But, because he was such a prolific songwriter, he was able to release seven albums, including two albums that were released posthumously. Additionally, there are many live recordings, special studio sessions, and other recordings of Elliott floating around. I have a collection of a few hundred tracks, but many of these are different versions of the same songs.

"Misery Let Me Down," however, is a completely new song that I have never heard before. It's similar in sound to his other songs from the Either/Or era. Listen and download at the SoundCloud link below.

Races: "All For You"

I first heard Races back in May when, from somewhere, I got hold of their track, "Big Broom." Yesterday I rediscovered the band through "All For You," another track off their upcoming EP, Big Broom, which will be released in March.

Listen below, and browse their Bandcamp page here.

The Orwells: "Halloween All Year"

This post was supposed to be combined with two others that I may or may not post separately. I have spent a pretty lengthy amount of time trying to post it as a combined post, but have since given up, identified this one as the problem section, and found the bracket I left out of the html. I just had to quickly vent about that. Now, onto The Orwells:

The Orwells released their album, Remember When, on October 28th. Below I have included the Bandcamp player for their track, "Halloween All Year." It's not refined. But, it is good, and gives off good drunk-vibes. So, it's definitely worth checking out.

Oh, and by the way, The Orwells have generously included a link to download Remember When on their Bandcamp.

Sleeping in the Aviary

Sleeping In The Aviary released their album, You and Me, Ghost, in September, but it's still pretty good two months later. I have included the link to their Bandcamp here. Below, check out "Talking Out Of Turn."

Friendly Fires: "Hurting" (video)

A catchy song. A funny and entertaining video. Love it.

"Hurting" is one of several great tracks off the band's album, Pala.

Slow Magic: "Feel Flows"

Some chillwave. A lot of chillwave stuff tends to be a little too chill to the point where I lose interest before the end of the song. This track, though, I kind of like and can stick with it until the end. See what you think.

"Feel Flows" is available for download at bandcamp for $1.

We Are Pirates: "Canyon"

The Brazilian band, We Are Pirates, has just emerged into the realm of indie blogs. Check out their track, "Canyon" below.

The Black Keys: "Run Right Back"

There has been a lot of mounting hype surrounding the Black Keys' upcoming album, El Camino. This is the third time I've posted about it. But, considering the solid "Lonely Boy," I posted earlier and, now, "Run Right Back," the hype seems to be well-deserved.

Tennis: "Origins"

Tennis have announced a new album, Young and Old, due out February 14. The first single off that album, "Origins,"can be ordered as a 7" here.

Preview the track below:

P.S. The new album is being produced by Patrick Carney of the Black Keys.

Cícero: "Barley Legal" (Strokes cover)

I love The Strokes. Their last album is still growing on me, I guess, but my love for them endures. It is for this reason that I post this cover by Brazil's Cicero. Cicero covers "Barely Legal" off their first album, Is This It. I believe this cover is part of a slew of others from the same Strokes album by other Brazilian artists. Upon listening, I found it very difficult to avoid comparing Cicero's style to that of (Strokes drummer) Fab Moretti's Little Joy. Fab was born in Rio de Janeiro, after all.
